MODEL 1847 CAVALRY
MUSKETOON – ORIGINAL CAPTIVE SWIVEL RAMROD INTACT – VERY
NICE CONDITION:
Manufactured at the National Armory at Springfield, this
Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoon is one of the relatively
few that survived in the original configuration. This
attractive Musketoon retains the carbine sling ring and
bar, the original captured ramrod swivel assembly, and
the barrel has a smooth .69 caliber bore without a rear
sight as first issued, having escaped the more commonly
encountered alteration to the Artillery Musketoon
pattern. The lock plate and barrel bear matching dates,
1851. The lock plate is further stamped with the eagle
over the “US” and “SPRINGFIELD”. The barrel bears the
“V P” and eagle head proof stamps. All the stamps are
clear and legible. The iron metal surfaces are overall
bright and smooth with some light scattered pitting.
The brass trigger guard, butt plate, side plate and
barrel bands have a nice pleasing patina, with a hue
towards the very desirable reddish tones of aged,
unpolished brass. The stock is in very nice condition,
with a smooth grain overall with only a few minor
handling dings. On the left side of the butt stock is an
unfinished set of initials that were likely initiated by
a soldier before he was interrupted by his First
Sergeant’s gentle reminder that this Musketoon belonged
to the Army. The edges of the forearm barrel and ramrod
channels are intact. The left flat of the stock
directly behind the carbine sling bar has been worn due
to the rubbing of the carbine sling hook, further
evidence that this Musketoon was carried by a Dragoon
and as a result the cartouche that was struck in this
location has now been obliterated. The lock function is
crisp. The bore is overall bright and smooth with some
light scattered pitting as expected in these early
frontier used Musketoons. These M1847 Cavalry
Musketoons are one of the true early, pre-Civil War
veterans of the frontier American West, seeing action
across the Kansas and Texas plains and along the Santa
Fe Trail. The pleasing, rich appearance of these brass
mounted carbines, along with their role in a colorful
period of American history, warrants this Musketoon a
significant place in any US Martial Collection. $5550
