EARLY RUSSELL GREEN RIVER SKINNING KNIFE:
An original, early manufacture Russell Green River
Knife. This scarce specimen measures 15.25” overall
length. The 10” blade is well marked with “RUSSELL,
GREEN RIVER WORKS” with the Russell Diamond Cartouche
plainly displayed. This specimen appears to be in “like
new” condition as the blade still shows much of the case
hardening coloration in various blue, gold and reddish
tones and the handle scales remain light colored with
the surface grain still prominent. The blade is overall
smooth with a couple of small areas of minimal
discoloration, but no pitting or corrosion. The blade
is sharp, but has not been overly sharpened to change
the familiar swell contour of the blade. The wood
handle scales are intact, and in excellent condition
with no breaks, splits or chips and are still held
firmly in place with the original brass pins. This is a
great specimen of the early skinning and butcher knives
sold to the buffalo hunters, Indians, trappers and
settlers in the Indian War period west. This is not the
common table knife size that is offered today, but a
knife capable of supporting life on the plains. A nice,
historically significant piece, in exceptional
condition. $175
