MODEL 1855 COLLINS AND
COMPANY BAYONET – MADE FOR AND ISSUED WITH THE COLT
SPECIAL MODEL 1861 RIFLE MUSKET:
One of the more difficult Civil War Bayonets to find,
this Model 1855 Bayonet was manufactured under contract
by Collins and Company and is so marked on the socket,
“CO & Co.” with a bright legible “US” on the blade. It
is generally believed that these Collins and Company
Bayonets were manufactured for and supplied with the
Colt’s Special Model 1861 Rifle Musket and this
association, coupled with an apparently lower survival
rate than that of the standard M1855 Bayonets, makes
these Collin and Co. marked blades very desirable and
difficult to find on the loose. This bayonet is overall
bright, with light pitting overall on the socket and the
blade, with some heavier pitting on the lower areas of
the blade. This bayonet has seen some use and has
suffered from the passing years and is priced
accordingly, well below what these blades are normally
priced. Given the scarcity of Collins marked bayonets,
this specimen is still worthy of consideration for the
right rifle musket. (0206) $165 |
