MODEL
1868 TRIAL TROWEL BAYONET AND
SCABBARD: This
fairly scarce example of the Model 1868 Trial Trowel Bayonet
and Scabbard would be an important addition to your
collection to display with your Model 1868 Springfield Rifle,
or any of your Model 1870 Trial Rifles. A relatively limited
number of these early trowel bayonets, believed to have
been 200, were fabricated at the Springfield Armory by
shortening the original triangular blade and welding the
trowel blade and finger loop in place. This specimen
shows use and there is some pitting towards the tip of
the blade. The balance of the blade is still fairly
bright and overall the bayonet is a very desirable
example of this scarce trial piece. The scabbard’s is
solid with all seams intact and complete with the
attractive brass tip. The leather surface of the body
and reinforcing collar is bright and shiny with some
minor spots of flaking. The belt loop as expected,
shows more wear with some flaking, however the patent
date is still present and legible. In light of the
rarity of these Trial Bayonets, this is a very
respectable example of a scarce bayonet.
