US NAVY MODEL 1873 45/70
TRAPDOOR BAYONET SCABBARD:
This standard Model 1873 Trapdoor Bayonet Scabbard
differs from those issued to the troops in the US Army
in that the brass rosette bears “USN”, indicating it was
produced for and issued to, sailors in the US Navy. The
Springfield Trapdoor Rifles were carried aboard the
ships as part of their small arms inventory along with
these unique scabbards.
The leather frog and swivel
are intact and the brass swivel turns smoothly without
being loose. The leather surfaces of the frog and belt
loop have some crazing, however the leather retains a
shiny surface and the leather is pliable with a stable
surface with no flaking. There is a star shaped
cartouche stamped on the reverse of the loop immediately
above the brass swivel, a mark applied perhaps aboard
ship as an inventory mark. The metal scabbard still has
the blued finish, is generally smooth with only a couple
very minor spots of very light pitting, really
unnoticeable.
This is a very nice, and quite scarce, US Navy bayonet
scabbard, and one that would add an interesting
dimension to your Trapdoor collection.
