PATTERN 1885
OFFICER’S SPURS – NICE MATCHED PAIR w/ ORIGINAL SPUR
STRAPS – EXCELLENT SET:
As described
in The American Military Spur, by Dorsey on pages
62-63 and page 78, the Pattern 1885 Officer’s Spur
was introduced with the other new cavalry equipment in
Ordnance Memoranda No. 29, and in addition to the sets
manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal, the same pattern
spur was commercially manufactured and available for
private purchase by the officers.
Both pairs listed below
– one with the original straps and the other without
straps – were manufactured on the commercial market and
both pairs feature the distinctive “sunburst” pattern
detailing on the rowels. Save for the presence of the
straps, both pair are identical and may well have been
manufactured by the same maker.
Both are very nice
matched pairs of Pattern 1885 Officer’s Spurs which
would be make a nice addition to your Indian War cavalry
collection.
