MODEL 1912 OFFICER AND ENLISTED SERVICE SADDLE STIRRUPS - EXCELLENT MATCHED PAIRS: As
pictured on page 312 of
The American Military
Saddle 1776-1945,
this stirrup design was already in use by the US Army’s
field artillery when it was adopted for use on the Model
1912 Saddles. For the enlisted saddle, the
stirrups were manufactured of nickel steel with a sanded
oxidized finish, giving it a subdued dark color. The
stirrups for the officer saddle “…are the same as those
on the service [enlisted] saddle, but they are of bright
finish instead of the sanded oxidized dark finish”.
I have the following pairs of Model 1912 Stirrups
available, both for the officer and the enlisted service
saddles, each described below with accompanying
photographs.

NO. 1
MODEL 1912 OFFICERS SADDLE STIRRUPS - EXCELLENT MATCHED PAIR:
This matched pair of original
Model 1912 Officer's Saddle Stirrups retains an
even bright finish which has oxidized with time, but
would brighten up with some minimal polishing with steel
wool if you prefer. Both are full form with no
misshaping or damage. Both stirrups are stamped on the
bottom of the tread “US” and “M.D. Co.”.
Due to the limited number of Model 1912 Officers Saddles
produced, these Model 1912 Officer Stirrups are seldom
encountered, especially in matched pairs. This is a
rare opportunity to add a set to complete your saddle or
add to your collection. (0306) $250

NO. 2
MODEL 1912 ENLISTED SERVICE SADDLE STIRRUPS - VERY
GOOD MATCHED PAIR:
This matched pair of original
Model 1912 Enlisted Service Saddle Stirrups has lost the
original darkened finish through use and age, however
they retain an
even bright finish. Both are full form with no
misshaping or damage. Both stirrups are stamped on the
bottom of the tread "R.I.A." for Rock Island Arsenal, “US”,
"NS" for nickel steel, and one retains the date stamp
"1913". This is a very respectable set to
complete your saddle or add to your collection.

NO. 3
MODEL 1912 ENLISTED SERVICE SADDLE STIRRUPS - VERY
GOOD MATCHED PAIR:
This matched pair of original
Model 1912 Enlisted Service Saddle Stirrups retains an
even bright finish. Both are full form with no
misshaping or damage. Both stirrups are stamped on the
bottom of the tread “US”, and the civilian contractor's
initials "G. SS & BROS". I suspect these
were made during the mobilization for World War One when
the army let so many similar contracts for the large
amounts of equipment they anticipated needing to
prosecute the war. This is a very respectable set to
complete your saddle or add to your collection.
