MODEL 1847 DRAGOON
HALTER LEAD STRAP – WITH BRASS FACED BUCKLE AS ISSUED
WITH THE PRE-CIVIL WAR DRAGOON GRIMSLEY PATTERN HORSE
EQUIPMENTS:
As with all of these pieces of the early pre-Civil War
Dragoon Horse Equipment, this Model 1847 Halter Lead Strap is
one of the items that simply disappeared into history
with a very low survival rate in today’s collections.
Fitted with an iron, brass-faced “horseshoe” shaped
buckle, this halter strap is full length at 7 feet as
indicated by the description of the Model 1847 Horse
Equipments published by the Board of Officers in
December of 1847. The strap has the full length billet
that buckles into the halter, the standing loop, and the
end of the strap has the proper original taper as
indicted in the description. The surface of the leather
shows some crazing due to age and storage, but showing
little if any use, the strap is overall supple with no
weak points or damage. It is certain that most of
these straps that still existed in the army’s inventory
were used to destruction during the Civil War and were
simply too handy and useful to survive the years to
exist today in any significant numbers. An integral
piece of horse equipment issued to each dragoon, this
early halter lead may well be a unique offering that you
will not see again soon.
