BLACK BUFF LEATHER ENLISTED SWORD KNOT:
An excellent example of those white buff leather items
of the pre-1851 Dragoon period which were dyed black
when the change was ordered in 1851, this pre-Civil War
Enlisted Man’s Black Buff Leather Sword Knot is in
wonderful condition.
Measuring 18” long as it hangs on
the saber and 1” wide, the leather is soft and supple
with no damage to the strap and all of the tassels are
intact, unbroken and present, as well as the sliding
leather keeper. The exterior surface is a soft, even
dark brown as are most black buff leather items due to
exposure to ultraviolet light, and the underside retains
the undyed, creamy white buff color.
Issued with the
Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Sabres, the Light Cavalry Sabres and
the Light Artillery Sabres from 1851 through the Civil
War, these black buff knots have experienced a very low
survival rate and are missing from all but the most
advanced collections. This particular knot was found
attached to a relic Light Cavalry sabre recovered from a
barn in the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania area. $850 |
