US ARMY
MILLS .45-70 REMINGTON-LEE MAGAZINE RIFLE BELT:
A Mills Woven Magazine and Looped Cartridge Belt for the
.45-70
Remington Lee Army Rifle. One of the fairly scarce
Mills belts of the 1880’s, this belt features four open
topped magazine pouches, each fitted with a leather
retaining strap that fastens onto an iron final, and an
additional 30 cartridge loops. The cartridge loops,
differing from those on the more familiar Indian War and
Spanish American Mills belts, are woven closed at the
bottom of the loop. The brass belt tip is stamped “PAT
MAR 1889”. The number "72" is
stenciled on the inside of the right side of the belt,
most likely a unit inventory number which indicates this
belt was issued to a soldier. This specimen is in very good condition,
showing only minor wear in spots along the top edge and
light soiling from storage. The rivets holding the
leather retaining strap on the first magazine pouch were
beginning to wear through the web and the point of
attachment of this strap has been reinforced, however
this is only noticeable upon very close examination and
does not detract from the appearance or quality of this
scarce belt.
