VERY RARE COLT CONVERSION “PISTOL PICTURE” LABELED
BOX OF UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY .44 COLT CENTRE
FIRE PISTOL CARTRIDGES, ca 1880’s: This is
the exact box shown in Figure 5-92A on page 191,
A Study of Colt Conversions by R. Bruce McDowell.
Manufactured prior to the merger of with the Remington
Arms Company, this is a scarce, early Union Metallic
Cartridge Company (UMC) box bearing the very collectable
“Pistol Picture” orange label, which features an image
of a Colt Conversion Pistol. The box has been opened,
but it is complete and strong, and all of the original
fifty cartridges are present. The top label is missing
the lower right hand corner, but all of the pertinent
information is still present on this very rare box. The
side labels are complete and legible on all four sides,
and feature “.44 COLT’S” on both ends, the script Colt
Patent Firearms Co with the Rampant Colt on one side and
the other side bears the script testimonial that
guarantees these cartridges are for the Colt’s
Breechloading Army Pistol over Samuel Colt’s signature.
This early box is an overall scarce offering. The
combination of the caliber of the ammunition and the
association with a particularly collectable Colt
firearm; the very desirable and scarce pistol picture
label; and the added value of being the research
specimen documented in a well respected published work
on these early Colt Conversions, will make this box an
important addition to any Colt or ammunition
collection. $1100
