UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE COMPANY GREEN LABEL BOX
OF .40-2 ¼ INCH CALIBER SHARPS RIFLE CARTRIDGES:
Also known as the .40 Sharps Bottleneck as introduced by
Sharps in 1876, this is a very collectable .40-2 ¼
caliber Sharps Rifle ammunition cartridge box, bearing
the desirable UMC green label. The box is in very nice
condition with a full, legible cover label as can be
seen in the photographs below. The end label is in the
same condition, full form and legible, having been
carefully slit rather than torn as usually. There are
nine cartridges in the box – 6 are full, complete loads,
holding the classic paper patched bullet, five UMC
rounds and one headstamped Winchester; and three primed
empty cases, all wrapped in the original wrapping paper
in between the cartridges. The box is full form and
like the labels, is in excellent condition showing
little evidence of the normal wear and tear to which
these early boxes were subjected. The seams of both the
lid and the body are intact and the box holds its full
form. This is a very nice specimen of a desirable
loading for the famous M1874 Sharps Rifle, one that does
not appear on the collector market very often, and this
box will make a nice addition to display with your
rifle. $750
