1875 .45 CALIBER FRANKFORD ARSENAL AMMUNITION
PACKET FOR THE M1873 COLT ARMY AND THE M1875 SCHOFIELD
SMITH AND WESSON PISTOLS – UNOPENED SCARCE PACKET:
This unopened Frankford Arsenal packet of the shortened
.45 caliber pistol ammunition intended for use in both
the Colt M1873 and S & W M1875 Schofield Revolvers was
manufactured in the first year of the production of this
cartridge. Dated 1875, this packet contains the shorter
cartridge, reduced in length from the original longer
.45 pistol cartridge that had been introduced with the
M1873 Colt Army, in order to accommodate the shorter
cylinder of the Schofield. These early packets, issued
during the height of the Indian Wars on the Northern
Plains and across Texas and New Mexico, replaced the
earlier packets of longer cartridges then in inventory,
and this issue during the early years of the Indian Wars
coupled with the increased demand for ammunition from
the field, not many of these early 1875 dated packets
have survived. Considerably more difficult to find than
the 1874 dated packets for the Colt Pistol, this packet
will be an important addition to your ammunition and
revolver collections, to illustrate the development of
ammunition for the Frontier Army. This is an excellent,
solid packet with all the seams and edges intact and the
string is present. (1105) $750
