FRANKFORD ARSENAL INTERNALLY PRIMED .45/70
CARTRIDGES - CARBINE AND RIFLE - HEADSTAMPED "C" AND "R":
These internally
primed .45/70 cartridges were manufactured at the
Frankford Arsenal and have
clear, legible headstamps in the “F R or C Month Year”
format. These very nice early Indian War era cartridges
will add significantly when displayed in a Prairie
Belt, Woven Mills Belt, or a Cartridge Box in your
collection. As with all of the early ammunition, these
internally primed cartridges have begun to disappear
from the market and are increasingly difficult to find.
I have the
following internally primed headstamped cartridges
in stock, and each is listed and priced individually below with
accompanying photographs.

4 FRANKFORD ARSENAL INTERNALLY PRIMED .45/70 CARBINE
AND RIFLE BLANK CARTRIDGES
- VARIOUS HEAD STAMPS: During the
Indian Wars period blank ammunition
was regularly provided to the Cavalry troops, used to
accustom the horses to gun fire, and to the Infantry for
ceremonial occasions and funerals. The same blank
cartridge was used in both the carbines and rifles, with
no regard for the headstamps. Manufactured at the Frankford
Arsenal, these blanks were an integral component of the
standard issue of ammunition to the frontier soldier and
have a rightful place in any Indian War ammunition
display.
I have the following Internally
Primed Blank Cartridges, each described below with
accompanying photographs:
A - FRANKFORD ARSENAL INTERNALLY PRIMED .45/70 CARBINE
HEADSTAMPED BLANK CARTRIDGE: Headstamped
"C 3 80 F". $40

B - FRANKFORD ARSENAL INTERNALLY PRIMED .45/70 RIFLE
HEADSTAMPED
BLANK CARTRIDGE:
Various headstamp months in 78, 81, and 82. $30

C - FRANKFORD ARSENAL INTERNALLY PRIMED .45/70
BLANK CARTRIDGE -
HEADSTAMPED WITHOUT THE "R" OR "C": A
variant, these blank cartridges are approximately ½”
shorter than the standard blank cartridges. The
headstamp omits the "R" or "C" designation, but other
than the length appear to have been made the same as the
standard length blank cartridges. An interesting
variant to add to your cartridge collection. $35

FRANKFORD ARSENAL INTERNALLY PRIMED RIFLE CARTRIDGE -
FIRING PIN STRUCK: Internally primed
Frankford Arsenal .45/70 cartridges with the "R" rifle
headstamp. Attempts were made to fire both of
these cartridges, evidenced by the firing pin strike.
Headstamped as shown in the photo below, these would
still make good cartridges for a display.
