M1883 US ARMY WINTER ISSUE CANVAS HOOD:
These M1883 Canvas Winter Hoods were issued following
the Muskrat Caps as the next piece of headgear in the
continuum of the development of cold weather gear during
the Indian Wars for the soldiers on the northern
plains. The Canvas Hood was more durable and provided
more protection than the previously issued M1879 Muskrat
Cap. The heavy brown canvas hood, lined with bright
red wool, is cut to fully cover the soldier's head and
to fall over the shoulders of his coat. The hood is
equipped with a fold up visor and buttons in the front
of the throat with two buttons. In unissued condition
this hood still bears the paper Philadelphia Depot size
tag sewn on the front of the hood. This hood is in
excellent overall condition with no sign of mothing to
the red lining, and only a minor bit of wear to the
edges of the cloth covered metal button at the top of
the hood, making for a very attractive addition to your
Indian War or headgear collection. (079) $185
