US ARMY INDIAN WAR ENLISTMENT CHEVRON – SERVICE IN
WAR, ARTILLERY: A fairly scarce item of Indian
War Uniform insignia, this Enlisted man’s SERVICE IN WAR
Enlistment Chevron, authorized in 1882 under General
Order 92, is full length and appears to have be attached
to a uniform blouse at one time. This enlistment
chevron would have been worn by a veteran of the Civil
War or of one of the engagements during the Indian Wars
in which the Light Artillery regiments regularly
participated. It measures 12” long and the correct ¾”
wide. Made of the same worsted wool as the rank
chevrons, this specimen features a white stripe, backed
by an oversized red stripe resulting in the chevron
showing the correct pattern for an veteran combat
artilleryman. The other branches simply edged their
appropriate colored chevron with a 1/8” red border, but
with the red artillery chevrons this edge would not have
shown properly, hence the different combination for
artillery. Overall in very good condition, showing only
minor age soiling, there are a few small holes in the
red backing from where it was sewn to the uniform sleeve
and subsequently removed, but these holes are not
readily apparent and do not detract from this scarce
piece of Indian War insignia. $75
