MODEL 1910 RIMLESS EAGLE SNAP CANTEEN – EARLY
FIRST PATTERN COVER FOR ISSUE TO MOUNTED SOLDIERS:
These Model 1910 Rimless Eagle Snap Canteen Covers
fitted with sewn-on “Y” shaped snap hook hangers for
issue to mounted troops were apparently made for a
relatively short period of time.
The hanger attached to this Model 1910 Canteen Cover
followed the pattern of the Model 1904 Canteen Strap, a
folded canvas “Y” shaped hanger which attached to the
canteen with blackened brass hooks fitted to each leg of
the “Y”. In 1907, the arsenals introduced a similar “Y”
shaped hanger which no longer used the brass hooks, but
now was sewn directly to the reverse of the cover on the
ovoid Model 1904 Canteens. (click

example of this 1907 hanger has been found sewn to an
Model 1904 ovoid canteen cover dated 1910, indicating
that specimen was produced immediately before the
introduction of the Model 1910 Canteen.
Based on the ink stamps on surviving specimens, these
early Eagle Snap Model 1910 Mounted Canteen Covers with
the sewn on hanger were produced in 1911, 1912, 1913 and
1914, but in spite of those four years of production,
surviving examples are fairly scarce on the collector’s
market.
This Model 1910 Rimless Eagle Snap Canteen presents in
very nice condition showing only minimal signs of issue
and use. The cover has some minor soiling on the back
side and some wear along the rear bottom seam, both
consistent with being carried clipped to an equipment
ring on a saddle.
Both of the rimless eagle
snaps are intact and fully functional with none of the
tearing or separation often found in the material
surrounding the snaps. There is no evidence that the
front of the cover was ever stamped with the
characteristic “US”, nor are there any maker or date
stamps on the inside of the flaps. There is a stencil
on the reverse, and while it is not fully legible, it
appears to be the name of the soldier to whom this
canteen was issued.
The canteen is full form with only a few dents and
handling marks commensurate with the service in the
field, but the canteen is not abused or misshapen, the
cap threads are functional, and the original chain and
ring are present and intact. The cup is likewise full
form with no dents and no misshaping. There is no maker
stamp on either the canteen or the cup.
This is a very nice example of the
fairly scarce early pattern Mounted Model 1910 Rimless
Eagle Snap Canteen complete with the “Y” shaped snap
hook hanger for attaching it to the soldier’s cartridge
belt or his saddle. (0205)
