MODEL 1917 MOUNTED CANTEEN – COVER AND STRAP MARKED AND DATED “JQMD 1935” AND “RIA 1935” – VERY NICE COMPLETE SPECIMEN IN EXCELLENT CONDITION:  This is an excellent example of the Model 1917 Mounted Canteen for which the cover was manufactured at the Jeffersonville Quartermaster Depot and the suspension strap was made at Rock Island Arsenal – both dated 1935.

The cover bears a light, but legible “US” on the front of the cover.  The reverse of the cover is stenciled “J.Q.M.D.” and dated “1935”.  The tip of the leather carrying strap is stamped with “R.I.A.” and “1935” – an interesting feature as this arsenal stamp indicates that JQMD and Rock Island were acting in concert on this late production effort.  Not only do these stamps make for a nice matching set, but they are also proof of how late into the 20TH Century this model of canteen was being made to supply the remaining horse cavalry units.  These covers and straps bearing these late dates must have been made in limited numbers as they are not common – this is only the second example bearing this date that I have seen.

The cover shows virtually no evidence of having been used in the field.  There is none of the wear or damage to the cover that is normally seen, the webbing is bright and clean, and the felt interior lining is complete with no wear or mothing.  All of the seams are intact and the canvas is still strong.  The lift the dot snaps are both complete, function well and show no signs of tearing around the snaps as is often the case.   In addition to the “J.Q.M.D.”, the cover is also stenciled with “H 8642”, likely a unit inventory control number.  The same format of this unit applied number was noted on the waist band of a pair of Pattern 1926 Trousers, suggesting that the format for marking individual equipment had changed after World War One.

The original leather suspension strap, full length and complete with all the hardware, is in like new condition, retaining a smooth surface to the leather with no crazing or flaking and is still very supple with a bright russet color.

The canteen retains its form, all the seams are intact, there are no unsightly dents, and the cap is intact with the original retention chain.  The cup is in full form with no signs of damage or wear, and the handle functions properly.

Overall an exceptional set, this Model 1917 Mounted Canteen would be difficult to improve upon and it has the added value of the matching dates on the Quartermaster Depot and Arsenal stamps. (0427) $175
