M1866 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE TOOL-RARE VARIANT #2:
Another one of a kind variation of the early Indian War
Period US Army M1866 Combination Tool issued to the
troops to maintain and service the M1866 Springfield
Trapdoor .50/70 caliber Rifle. This specimen was
modified from the M1863 Rifled Musket Combination Tool
by milling one of the two screwdriver blades to
incorporate the unique two-pronged spanner wrench to
accommodate the spanner nut on one end of the hinge pin
screw and the spanner nut retaining the spring loaded
firing pin on the M1866 Rifle. Apparently the cone
wrench was left intact to use as a mainspring vise,
similar in function to the open wrench on the M1879
Combination Tool. The tool show some use, however much
of the original arsenal blue present and the spanner
wrench prongs are intact.
