MODEL 1868 COMBINATION TOOL
– SOLDIER MARKED:
As pictured on page 88 of Gun Tools, Their History
and Identification, Shaffer, Rutledge, and Dorsey,
this Model 1868 Rifle Combination Screwdriver is one of
the scarcer gun tools of the early Indian War period.
Manufactured at the arsenals, the M1855 Combination Cone
Wrench and Screwdriver was modified by removing the cone
wrench, no longer necessary with the metallic cartridge
rifles, to produce these Model 1868 Tools. In very good
condition, this M1868 Combination Screwdriver shows
evidence of use as apparently the soldier to whom it was
issued marked the tool with a series of “X”’s, perhaps a
record of his enlistment, a shooting score, or the
engagements he participated in on the frontier. In
spite of these marks, the tool still retains much of the
original bright arsenal blue, and will make a nice
accessory for your M1868 Springfield Rifle. (0408) $85
