ca. 1870 US ARMY CLEANING ROD AS ISSUED WITH THE
SMITH AND WESSON NO. 3 AMERICAN AND SCHOFIELD REVOLVERS:
As described in detail on page 300 (“Top Rod”) of Gun
Tools, Their History and Identification, Shaffer,
Rutledge, and Dorsey, this well recognized slotted
cleaning was manufactured by Smith and Wesson and
provided to the army for issue with both the No. 3
American and both models of the Schofield Revolvers
during the Indian War years.
These are relatively scarce appendages from the early
days of the cartridge revolvers and are an important
component to complete a display of these historic
