M1876 TRAPDOOR COMBINATION TOOL:
An Indian War period U.S. Army issue M1876 Combination
Tool for the M 1873 Springfield Trapdoor .45/70 Carbines
and Rifles, and for the Colt and Smith and Wesson
Revolvers. This tool, modified from the M1863
Springfield Combination Tool, incorporates a “U” shaped
cut which served as a mainspring clamp and the two
different sizes of screwdrivers necessary to dismount
and maintain these firearms. The M1876 Combination
Tool was produced for a relatively short period, being
replaced by the more familiar M1879 Combination Tool,
hence the M1876 is less often encountered in today’s
market. This specimen is in excellent condition. See
