ca. 1870 US ARMY CLEANING ROD AS ISSUED WITH THE
SMITH AND WESSON NO. 3 AMERICAN AND THE COLT RICHARDS
CONVERSION REVOLVERS, AS WELL AS THE REMINGTON ARMY .50
CALIBER SINGLE SHOT PISTOL: As described in
detail on page 300 of Gun Tools, Their History and
Identification, Shaffer, Rutledge, and Dorsey, this well
recognized slotted cleaning was produced at the
Watervliet Arsenal in conjunction with the Model 1870
and 1872 Holsters which incorporated the integral wiping
rod pocket mounted on the holster body. These holsters
were issued with both the Smith and Wesson No. 3
American and Colt Richards Conversion Revolvers, and the
Remington .50 Caliber Army Single Shot pistol during the
early 1870’s, and these longer rods measuring 11 13/16”
were used for all three pistols. These are relatively
scarce appendages from the early days of the cartridge
revolvers and are an important component to complete a
display of these historic pistols. (050) $95
