US ARMY M1917 BROWNING .30 CALIBER MACHINE GUN
AMMUNITION BOX: A World War One US Army M1917
.30 Caliber Browning Machine Gun wooden ammunition box
in excellent condition, this artifact of the Great War
has survived without any significant wear or damage.
The steel, push button catch functions, the two grooves
for mounting on the gun are complete and are not split
out, the steel hinge functions smoothly and the leather
handle is present. On the interior of the bottom of the
box, the stencil of the outline of three cartridges is
still present, which served to orient the loading of the
ammunition belts so that the ammunition would feed
properly into the gun. The front lower corner of this
box has the standard modification performed by the
Ordnance Department to replace the 90 degree corner with
a 45 degree insert. In service, it was discovered that
the square 90 degree corner interfered with the gun’s
tripod when the gun was traversed with the ammo box hung
on the side of the gun. The 45 degree corner eliminated
this problem. All of the dove tailed joints are tight
and intact and there are no cracks or splits. The box
measures 12.75” long, 8 1/8” high and 4.5” high. This
is a very nice accessory to complete your display of WWI
arms and field equipment, and a handy storage container
for your collection. (#1) $150
