CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY LIMBER POLE PAD-mkd ALLEGHENY
ARSENAL 1863:
A Civil War issue U.S. Artillery Pole Pad, used to cover
the forward end of the limber pole so the end of the
pole would not gouge the two lead horses, as described
on page 148 of the 1863 Ordnance Manual. Note that this
is the much scarcer early pattern, assembled with
stitches, as opposed to the later war type that was
riveted. This full form leather pad measures 4 3/8” in
diameter and 4 1/2” long, features a socket to fit over
the end of the limber pole and retains the original
steel pin that anchored the pad in place on the pole.
The top, or front of the pad is legibly stamped,
“ALLEGHENY ARSENAL 1863”. The overall condition
appears to be “like new” and unissued as the leather is
smooth and live with no crazing or flaking and minimal
scuffs due to storage through the years. A relatively
scarce piece of Civil War artillery equipment,
identified to, and as produced by, one of the famous
arsenals. SOLD
