1836 SECRETARY OF WAR REPORT ON ORDNANCE AND
ORDNANCE STORES – SCARCE EARLY PRINTING – GOOD ARTILLERY
AND DRAGOON MATERIAL: One of the earliest
Secretary of War Reports I’ve found that deals
specifically with Ordnance; this original printing of
the 1836 dated report to the 24th Congress
contains a wealth of information regarding the early US
Army. This 366 page document was apparently part of a
larger bound volume or was intended to be bound between
a set of covers, as it lacks any hard cover, but the
pages are bound together and the document is intact.
The text and accompanying data tables contain a wealth
of information regarding the available equipment in the
various categories from the heaviest of artillery and
all the necessary accessories to service the guns to the
individual small arms and components, as well as the
accoutrements carried by the private soldier. The
reported data is organized by class of arms with
individual reports of materials on hand from each armory
and arsenal.
In remarkably very good condition, the pages are all
present with little if any sign of wear and no damage
and all of the printing is legible. If your interests
focus on the pre-Civil War army, to include many of the
arms used during the Mexican War, I believe you will
find this edition both interesting and very useful.
These early reports simply do not show up on the open
market anymore and this one will make a worthwhile
addition to your library or display.
