CIVIL WAR OR EARLY INDIAN WAR ENLISTED SOLDIER
CARTE DE VISTE – WEARING A GREAT COAT, FORAGE CAP AND
SMOKIN' A CEEGAR – NEVADA PHOTOGRAPHER: What
appears to be an outside posed image, this young soldier
is seated against what could be the side of a tent,
wearing his forage cap and kersey blue greatcoat, and
sporting a cigar held in the corner of his mouth. This
CDV is in very good to excellent condition, with no edge
wear or damage and no bends or damage to the corners.
Printed at the bottom of the face of the card is “Louis
Monaco, Photo., Eureka, Nevada” and Monaco’s logo and
advertising information is printed on the reverse of the
card. Louis
Monaco was a photographer/artist in Nevada in the mid to
late 19th century, and Nevada was admitted to the Union
in late 1864 during the Civil War. Based on the
soldier’s uniform and the information on the card, it is
impossible to determine if this image was made during or
after the Civil War. There were troops in some numbers
operating in the far western theater to include Nevada
and California during the War, but on the same token,
the soldiers participating in the Indian War campaigns
after the Civil War continued to be issued Civil War
uniforms. These possibilities make this an interesting
image from a far west photographer. $200
