WORLD WAR TWO BRITISH COMMONWEALTH JOHNSON &
JOHNSON “FIRST FIELD DRESSING” MANUFACTURED IN SYDNEY,
AUSTRALIA: This is a 1942 dated “FIRST FIELD
DRESSING” as was issued to the British Commonwealth
Forces during World War Two. Manufactured in Sydney,
Australia by Johnson & Johnson PTY, LTD., a subsidiary
of the Johnson & Johnson parent corporation, this field
dressing was the British Commonwealth counterpart to the
US Armed Forces Carlisle First Aid Packets.
This packet was found in a collection of US Army World
War Two medical equipment discovered in an estate and it
seems likely it was acquired when the balance of the
supplies were picked up. While I have no information to
this affect, it seems reasonable that these dressings
would have been supplied the US Forces in the South
Pacific due to shortages or interruptions in the supply
system.
This packet is in excellent, unissued condition with all
of the seams intact, the printed information and maker’s
name and date fully legible, and the cloth is clean and
strong with no weaknesses or deterioration. The “PTY,
LTD” in the maker’s name stands for “Propriety Limited”.
It is an Australian and South African form of
corporation, designating a company that cannot have more
than 50 shareholders and is restricted in the number of
overall shares: hence the name.
This British First Aid Dressing is an interesting World
War Two medical item to add to your collection that has
survived in remarkable condition. (0218) $25
