ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL HISTORIES – TWO VOLUME SET
PUBLISHED BY RIA: These two volumes were
printed independently of each other by the Rock Island
Arsenal, but are being offered here as a set.
AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL AND
ARSENAL ISLAND – PARTS ONE AND TWO, as the title
suggests was originally printed as a two volume set in
1989. This 1990 printing combined the two parts in a
single binding. A full sized paperback, this 116 page
book provides a detailed history of the island, the
founding and construction of the arsenal and the
arsenal’s mission. Well illustrated with original 19TH
Century maps, construction plans and a wealth of
period photographs, this volume provides an excellent
historical record of this famous US Army Ordnance
Department arsenal.
The second volume, THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR: ITS
IMPACT ON THE ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL was published on
the 100TH anniversary of the war. This 24
page full sized paperback provides some interesting
information specific to the arsenal’s response to the
demands for equipment during the short period of
hostilities, and features an impressive selection of
photographs taken of the exterior scenes around the
arsenal, and more importantly, of the interior of many
of the workshops and employees at work.
Both volumes are ex libris and are both in very good
condition with strong bindings, minimal shelf wear and
no missing or loose pages.
Published in limited quantities, these two volumes
provide an insight into the both the mission and the
history of this famous arsenal. (0818) $40
